What to Do If You Get Locked Out

There are many different situations where people may be locked out and there are several reasons why you may experience a lockout situation. Many locksmith companies categorize lockouts as residential, commercial and automotive. If you are locked out, chances are that it will fall under in of these categories.

If you believe that you are locked out, there are several things that you can do. Although some of them may not seem beneficial initially, there is some benefit in doing these things.
  • First, make sure that you’re really locked out.
This may seem like a redundant step to take, but you may be surprised to know how important it is. Some people may be locked out of one entrance point and forget that there are other ways that they can access their property. For instance, if you are at home and you realized that you cannot enter your home through the front door, make sure that you check the back door, garage door or any other points of entry. You may have left a door open and forgotten about it.

Windows are not off limits too. If you have left a window open, you may be able to crawl through and regain access to your home. So, before you start panicking and getting into a frenzy, make sure you have exhausted all your options as it relates to getting back inside your home.
  • Recollect where you may have left spare keys.
Once you realize that you are locked out for real, it is time to get into action. But, before you do anything, make sure that you remain calm. It is easier to think when you are calm. Your thoughts will be more rational and you are usually able to recall things better. For this step, recollection is extremely important. If you have hidden a spare key somewhere or given an extra set of keys to a friend, family member or some other person you can trust, now is the time to remember who and where. If you do not have spare keys around, you may be in a bit of a pickle. Although, you may just be in a similar situation if the person who has your key is unable to give it to you in a timely manner.
  • Determine the urgency of the situation.
Some lockout situations are more urgent than others. If you have a young child inside your vehicle or home while you are locked out, getting inside will require much more urgency that someone who simply wants to get back inside to sleep. Evaluate your situation to see how long you are able to wait for help. This will determine who you call and the type of help that you request.

Many local locksmith companies will have great response times for emergencies such as this. However, there may be a wait sometimes depending on how busy the locksmiths are in your area.
  • Call for help.
Now that you have pretty much exhausted your options, it is time to call for help. If your situation is not very urgent, you should be able to wait on the services of a locksmith. If, however, you need to get back inside quickly, you may have to take more drastic measures. Your local emergency services may be able to get you back inside quickly so you can reunite with your baby or so you can attend to some other urgent situation.
